We started with the Havanese Shih tzu cross a couple of years ago with the hopes of taking two breeds we love and combine them into the ultimate family pup. We have lived with both Havanese and Shih tzu long enough to know they are great breeds as they are but we hoped we could make better pets by combining the two.
Statements made about dog personality and characteristics are generalizations in every sense. Each and every dog is different. The consistency of training and discipline in puppies will also reflect how each puppy will turn out.
The reason there is so much information on the history, characteristics, standards and health of the Havanese and the Shih tzu is because there is no guarantee as to which features of a breed will be more prominant in a first generation cross. You will notice traits from both parent breeds. We do see a fairly consistent appearance of certain traits appearing.
HYBRID VIGOUR (or for the geneticists - HETEROSIS) is the term used to describe the burst of fertility, good health and growth that is seen in the progeny when two unrelated breeds are mated. The longer that these breeds have been separated, and the greater the differences between them, the stronger will be the resulting hybrid vigour.
Hybrid vigour is not a theory, it is the name given to describe something that happens repeatably throughout all species in the animal and plant kingdom. When unrelated breeds of any animal species are mated the offspring in the first generation will be more healthy, fertile, and (in animals) mentally stable than either parent breed. This first F1 (Filial1) generation as the geneticists call it, will be intermediate in characterisics to the parent breeds and the offspring will resemble each other.
What traits do we see in the Havanese Shih Tzus?
Our Havanese Shih tzus pups are a more tolerant, friendly, easy going pet. They are easy to train, picking up new things quickly. They make good watch dogs, alerting their owners to new people but calm fast and are friendly towards them. They love children of all ages, becoming everyone in the family's companion.
With their diversified gene pool, they are healthy puppies. Avoiding the degeneration of the Havanese lines from the line breeding and inbreeding that happened too recently in their history. They can still be prone to a few of the toy breed dogs hereditary afflictions but careful breeding can reduce these.
They have a longer snout reducing the common breathing problems of the shih tzu and also cutting back on eye injuries the shih tzu frequently obtain. They have a variety of beautiful colors that give them a one of a kind appearance. They require limited grooming to maintain a beautiful coat that is non shedding and considered hypoallergenic.
The overall package is a walking teddy bear, ready to hear you secrets, accompany you on outings or content to await your return. They are loyal, smart and laid back. The perfect dog able to fit into most lifestyles effortlessly.
