I'm sure we all realize that there are very few guarantees in life. You can not look at a living breathing animal and make any kind of promise in regards to the life it may lead. There are too many things that may effect the outcome.
There are many things that are beyond our control as breeders. The amont of colustrum a puppy gets in it's first 24 hours of life may seem so inconsequential but really shapes up the way that puppy will survive and produce immunities for life. An extra tug on the umbilical cord by mom may produce a hernia that needs to be repaired later in life.
If there are no guarantees in life than why are health guarantees important?
It's important for you as a purchaser to know that the breeder cares about your puppy after it leaves their hands. It's important for you to know that just because your puppy look healthy at the time of sale, that it is going to remain that way beyond the first three days which is all some breeders offer. We owe it to you to ensure you get more than three days with your puppy especially since there are conditions your puppy may have that don't present for a week or more after purchase.
I have heard excuses from other breeders, even ones that provide registration papers with their Havanese, that they are not able to give a health guarantee because their puppies are not "show quality" or that health guarantees only come with the more expensive "show dogs". Why are you not entitled to a health guarantee as well even though you are only buying a pet? Are they not worth it? I have heard other breeders say they do not offer a health guarantee because it would not be fair to you to have to give up your pet at the age of two in order to get a replacement...so why not make a guarantee that does not require you to give up your pet?
For me a health guarantee is important because I run a breeding program and I hope to be running it 10 years...20 years down the line. I have a quality foundation to my program and I want to know if there are going to be concerns down the line that I may need to deal with. Providing you with a guarantee is my request that you tell me if I have a fault that I need to fix. It is my Thank You for taking the time to let me know that something is not right.
I don't want you to have to give up your pet. I don't want to charge you extra for the right to a healthy pet that will last you years. I want you to feel comfortable adopting a puppy from me. I want you to know that I care and that I want your puppy to last as long as possible. I want you to know I care about the dogs that stay here and that any information you can give me inregards to their future well being or their future pups well being is worth something to me.
